Carnival backpacks!!!

Published by Cara Honey on

On the 13th of February I travelled to the Isle of Wight with Play to the Crowd’s Play Makers to attend a Carnival backpack making session with The New Carnival company.

The aim of the workshop was to create our very own child size backpacks.

I created a glittery set of fairy wings, but this was one of the simpler designs. The breath and range of backpacks that could be made was staggering. We have round bases that were decorated as Pandas, Ying Yang and the World. Other participants created Papier-mâché turtles that was suspended off their shoulders, on poles above their head.

The aim of the workshop was to learn how to make the backpack frames for the Hat Fair Carnival. The Carnival will have a number of local schools and their pupils parading down Winchester town centre. The backpacks are handsfree, light and can be decorated in a variety of ways. The effect of a number of children wearing the themed backpacks can be very effective.
